The
Foundations.

Three sets of principles behind every interface we build: how perception groups what it sees, how type carries meaning and rhythm, and how motion communicates over time.

01

Gestalt

How perception groups what it sees. The cognitive shortcuts that turn marks on a screen into meaning — proximity, similarity, closure, figure-ground and the rest.

02

Typography

How type carries meaning, hierarchy and rhythm. Swiss and Bauhaus discipline applied to the web — measure, scale, leading and the baseline grid that holds it all together.

03

Motion

How change communicates over time. Purposeful animation — easing, timing, choreography and continuity — descended from Disney's twelve principles and adapted for the interface.
